Why Buy the 2018 Ford F-250 SD?
If you're looking for a pickup truck with capability, the answer to this question should be the 2018 Ford F-250 SD? The F-250 is the entry level Super Duty pickup, but there's nothing entry level about its capability, durability, and versatility.
If you want a hardcore work truck to go to places other vehicles shy away from and not worry about the consequences, the F-250 is the right choice. But if you also want the cabin to be outfitted with some of the very latest technology, features, comforts, and, yes, luxuries, the latest F-250 has got that covered too. Obviously, you can find trucks with higher capabilities in the F-Series family, but the F-250 is still a big step up in capability from its exceptional little brother, the F-150.
Which Ford F-250SD is Best?
Buyers don't have the dizzying array of trims, specifications, and engine options with the Ford F-250SD as they are with light-duty trucks, but they're not exactly starved of choice either. The F-250 can be a bare-bones work truck with few frills if you want it to be, but the cabin can also resemble the inside of a luxury sedan if that's your priority.
The trim levels start with the workmanlike XL, and from there they go up through XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and, finally to the top of the range, Platinum. The F-250 Platinum is quite a truck, but with a starting price of $62,660 it really should be. The Lariat is a nice halfway point in the range, with all the capability and more than a few of your desired features and comforts. With a starting MSRP of $45,550, that's our pick of the bunch.
Is the Ford F-250SD Gas or Diesel?
These days, a heavy-duty truck wouldn't be worth that label if it wasn't available in both gas and diesel forms. Although you can opt for either a gas or diesel F-250, Ford only offers one of each type of engine.
The standard engine is the carryover 6.2-liter V-8 gas engine, which develops a very healthy 385 horsepower and 430 lb.-ft. of torque. If that's not enough for your needs, then it's time to look at the turbodiesel, which is a 6.7-liter V-8 offering 440 horsepower and a massive 925 lb.-ft. of available torque. Don't get carried away about fuel economy, though. Although the diesel is a little less thirsty when unloaded, the chances are that a diesel engine will be asked to tow and haul more than a gas version, so the fuel economy difference is ultimately negligible.
How Much Can the Ford F-250SD Tow and Haul?
The simple answer to how much an F-250 can tow and haul could be "a lot, but not as much as an F-350, F-450 etc." When it comes to the amount an F-250 can haul, a Regular Cab model with a 141.5-inch wheelbase and two-wheel drive is the most capable format, with a rating as good as 4,200 pounds.
When it comes to the all-important matter of what the Ford can tow, which engine matters as much as which specification you go for. If towing is what you want your truck primarily for, diesel Crew Cab versions with two-wheel drive are the best performers with a rating of 18,000 pounds. If you have to have a gas engine, a two-wheel drive Regular Cab can manage as much as 15,700 pounds.
